The Protection of Refugees in Islam: Pluralism and Inclusivity

* Presently, the Director of the Centre for Studies in Modernity and Civil Society in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Dr Nur Manuty was formerly Associate Professor at the Centre for Fundamental Knowledge and Department of Usuluddin and Comparative Religion at the International Islamic University in Malaysia. He was previously the President of the Malaysian Muslim Youth Movement, former member of the National Islamic Consultative Committee of Malaysia, and has served on the board of the Institute of Islamic Understanding. He is currently Visiting Lecturer at the Markfield Institute of Higher Education, Leicester, UK, and is an active board member of the Malaysian Institute of Policy Study.


   Abstract

This article focuses on some principles in the Quran, Sunnah and Sirah of the Prophet Muhammad, with the aim of highlighting the position of Islam towards refugee protection. It discusses whether the question of refugee protection is in line with the values of pluralism and inclusivity in Islam. The article also examines the specific role played by the Malaysian Muslim Youth Movement, one of the leading Islamic non-governmental organizations in the country assisting in the protection of the rights of refugees in Malaysia.
